DIY Dollhouse Miniatures {Find It and Make It}

Every Other Friday is "Find It and Make It Friday" where I make a craft from my materials I already have in my craft stash.

As most of you know, I am working on a dollhouse for my niece's birthday. Dollhouse miniatures can get expensive to buy, so I am trying to be creative and make as many things as possible. Here are some miniatures I've made recently from recycled materials or items I already had.

The Ceiling Fan

I made this from a pinwheel and a water bottle cap. I simply broke the face of the pinwheel off and glued it to the bottle cap and glued the cap to the ceiling. The purpose of the cap is to create a base because it would've been hard to attach the pinwheel to the ceiling.

The Area Rug

To make this, I braided yarn that I already had from a failed attempt at learning how to knit. Then I wrapped the yarn in a circle, gluing the edges as I went.

The TV and DVD Player

To buy a piece of plastic square that looks like a TV and one that looks like a DVD player costs $7! Mine was free-AND personalized. The TV is made from a recycled plastic push pin box. I painted the box black and then printed a little photo of a scene from Disney's "Tangled" (which my niece loves). I cut a small grey piece of paper and drew on some buttons and Mod Podged the whole thing. For the DVD player, I used three layers of cardboard glued together. I painted it black, made the slit and buttons and Mod Podged it several times to the point where it now feels like plastic.

Here they are on the TV stand

The Clock and Wall Art

 I painted a wooden disc and found a clock face clip art on the internet and Mod Podged. Simple. The key is a cute little scrapbook embellishment I had. I thought it would made good wall art.

The side pillows
 I hand-stitched these with small pieces of fabric I had in my scrap pile. I stuffed them with cotton balls.

  2. April, you are cracking me up with this dollhouse. This is sooo much work for a child that isn't your own. But I love this about you. I'm sure your niece (and sister) will, too. :)

  13. Wow I love the ideas you did for the doll house. I have a farm house and a large Victorian House. My farm house is furnished but am still working on the Victorian. My hubby bought it for me and we built if form a kit in our time together on the week ends. I had never had a doll house as a small child and he remembered me mentioning it so got the kit at Christmas time for me. What a surprise it was. I also worked at Hobby Lobby part time and bought the farm house model when it was discontinued.
